Rio de Janeiro - La voie de Selarón

Ce Chilien de 51 ans à trouvé sa voie au Brésil et y consacre son œuvre; de peintre, il devient sculpteur et réalise petit à petit un escalier de plus de 120 mètres et 215 marches pour les Brésiliens.
Cette travail commencé il y plus de 15 ans à d'abord été moqué, puis sur-médiatisé (clip de Snoop Dog, nombreuses parutions) mais ne trouve sa vraie place qu'à Rio dans le côté de Lapa.
C'est de ce constat que j'avance un peu plus dans ma définition du street art, comme un travail artistique qui ne trouve sa réelle signification que dans la rue, que dans l'espace dans lequel et pour lequel il a été créé. En recouvrant cette vieille ruelle menant à une favella, Selarón lui donne un nouveau visage qui va bien au delà de la simple curiosité touristique. Cet escalier devient un peu de chaque habitant du quartier, leur donnant cette possibilité de sortir de leurs habitudes et de s'émerveiller face au travail accompli. Un art vivant.

This 51 years old Chilien native found his way in Brazil and dedicate all of its work to it and to Brazilan people. From painter to sculptor, he created litlle by little the most original Stairway in the world: 120 meters high and with 215 steps. This work began more than 15 years ago and was laugthed at, then over exposed (Snoop Dog video clip, many interviews) but find it's right place only in Rio in the area of Lapa.
That's with this kind of work and reflexion that i can precise my own definition of Street Art, as a artistic process which give its real sens only in the street, i mean only in public and specific space where it was thought. By covering this old street leading to a favella, Selarón give it a new expression which is more than a curiosity for tourists. This starway become a part of each inhabitant, giving them the daily possibility to get off their habits and to marvel at the work accomplished. A living art.
